Raise your hand if you have kids at home who eat through your pantry in less than a day! Yup, I'm right there with you. Before this 2020 pandemic, I was well aware that both of my kids were eating snacks like there was no tomorrow, but things turned to a whole 'notha' level once school was closed. It was clear that some of the snacking was from boredom, so I was determined to figure out a system to calm this madness.
A couple weeks ago, as I was browsing through Facebook, I came across a post someone had shared where a mother made snack baskets for her kids. Each day she adds snacks to their basket, and the child has free range to the basket for the day. Once the snacks are gone, they are gone. I saved the post, went to the store to stocked up on snacks, bought two baskets for my kids and the rest is history!
This system has worked wonderfully for my kids and myself. They aren't constantly asking for snacks like before. One other perk to this system is, instead of having to help them get a snack, they can easily go into the pantry and grab their snack and go!
I try to find a range of items for them that aren't loaded in sugar, but also makes snack time fun, too! During this restricted time at home, it has its up and downs, so anytime I can add a little special treat to their day I'm all for it. And as you can see behind their beautiful smiles, our pantry is staying pretty well stocked, including our snack containers on the shelf. ;)
